AC PICKS:

Xiren "Ship Of Fools" (SBMP)
From the Mile High city of Denver, Xiren (pronounced seer-rin) has impacted the format in a big way with his debut single, "Ship Of Fools." The hauntingness of the melody is reminiscent of U2, it's lyrically savvy, and boasts production values as good as or equal to anything else out there. For more info, go to xiren.net or myspace.com/xiren

Whitney Wolanin "So Close" (Top Notch)
In just a few short years, Whitney has truly matured and developed her songwriting style and "So Close" is moving her into a league with today’s top talent. "So Close" is powered by Whitney’s outstanding vocal performance, intelligent lyrics and infectious melody that just reels you in. Think Five For Fighting with tempo.

Nearly 10 years after the group's last studio effort, 2000's < EM, Sade comes roaring back to the chart with Soldier Of Love, which bowed at #1 this week with 502,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Soldier Of Love gives Sade its first #1 debut and its best sales week since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. It is also the band's second #1 album, after Promise spent two weeks at the top of the chart in 1986. All told, Sade has notched eight top 10 albums in a row on the Billboard 200. With that feat, Sade is the first group since Led Zeppelin to see its first eight charting albums all reach the top 10, according to Billboard.

Gwen Stefani took some time out from No Doubt's studio sessions in California to visit New York City for Fashion Week last week. Rolling Stone reports that Stefani previewed her "military and punk-inspired" fall line of her L.A.M.B. clothing collection on Thursday, and then spoke at the event about No Doubt's studio progress...

Stefani also said that the band has been inspired lately by the music of the '80s. Stefani said, "The last few weeks, we’ve been listening to the worst of the ’80s, in the sense of bad but good. Pop songs, one-hit wonders, nifty songs, things like that. You just go back and find things that you love, and try to figure out how they made them. We just listen to good songs, and then writing our own stuff, we try to pull it out wherever we can."

When asked, “What was the last thing I was listening to?," she replied, "Lionel Richie. I love him."

There is bad news for fans who were holding out hope that Peter Gabriel would reunite with Genesis for their Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction next month. Rock Hall president Joel Peresman has announced that Gabriel will not attend the event on March 15 in New York, confirming what Gabriel told Rolling Stone last month: that he was skeptical about performing with his old bandmates. "I learned at our last reunion [in 1982] that you can’t just get up there. You have to rehearse," Gabriel said, as he is in the midst of rehearsing for his own European tour. "I’m trying to find a way to do it. It’s not easy. If I can work it out, I’ll go." He added that it is unlikely that there will be a full Genesis reunion anytime soon because "Phil [Collins] has had trouble with his wrists and his back." Genesis will be inducted along with The Stooges, ABBA, Jimmy Cliff and The Hollies.
